What will happen during speech therapy?

  • Speech therapy can be carried out at home or in school.

  • Speech therapy targets will be identified based on the assessment.

  • Therapy will be delivered through play, using approaches and techniques appropriate to your child's needs.

  • Ongoing assessment will monitor the effectiveness of speech therapy.

  • Advice will be provided about how your child can be supported at home and in school with homework activities where appropriate.

How long will therapy take?

  • Each speech therapy session will usually last up to 1 hour, depending on your child's attention and motivation.

  • The number of sessions required will depend on the nature and severity of your child's difficulties and his/her progress.  I will try to give you an indication of the likely timescale, where possible.

  • We will discuss whether a break in therapy or discharge may be appropriate.  This may be when your child's difficulties have resolved or are likely to resolve without further input, when his/her needs are being met, when consolidation of skills is required, or when further speech therapy is not considered to be beneficial.
